CRADLE OF A NATION On route 132 at 3 kilometers east of the village of Kamouraska stands
an open-air chapel. Protecting this chapel is a large iron gate graced with the words BERCEAU DE KAMOURASKA 1692-1791 The first two churches and rectory were built at this site. Until 1791 the « Berceau de Kamouraska » was the most eastern settlement along the south Saint-Laurence river. In 1790 an earthquake forced the start of relocating the people and town to the present day Kamouraska. By 1793 all the area was relocated. With an area of 7705 squares meters the site was the initial point of reference for the families which incompase the towns of the region of Kamouraska and « Bas-Saint-Laurent ». The « Berceau de Kamouraska » is actually managed by the corporation « Le Berceau de Kamouraska Inc. » a non-profit group incorporated in 1973. Since 1992 the maintenance, general up-keep and development has been taken care of by « Le Berceau de Kamouraska Inc. ». Investments are now needed to keep the historical site. To complete the financing and reach goals of the committee more funding is necessary. |
